A donation of $5 (US) will directly purchase an insecticide-treated bed net for the individuals living with HIV/AIDS at Pro-Link.
These bed nets are essential tools to prevent malaria, as mosquitoes (carrying the malaria parasite) often prey at night when
their victims sleep. An ITN (insecticide-treated net) will protect the individual from mosquito bites at night and will thus
help prevent the individual (with a low immune response system due to HIV/AIDS) from contracting malaria. This can significantly
prolong the lives of many Africans, as ITN's are the most viable way to prevent and control malaria.
The use of these nets has been proven to reduce child mortality by about 20%. However, as of 2002, only 15% of African
children below age five slept under a net and only 2% under a treated net. This is largely because the $6 ITN's delivered
through prenatal clinics are prohibitively expensive for families in an area of the world in which over half of the population
lives in extreme poverty (making less than $1 per day).
